Family day out to Colchetser Zoo, in Essex

This is the second time we have been to Colchester Zoo and im glad we returned, after arriving and parking on the huge car park which I must say is very well organised with plenty of stewards to point you in the right direction. After parking the car we were pretty shocked at the massive queue but to be fair we didnt have to wait too long as they had every single kiosk open to get people in quicker.

As we went in the first thing the children saw was the really big wooden play area, with slides, things to climb up and other lots of fun things to burn some of their energy off, its a great secure play area which the children enjoyed very much. After half an hour it was time to head off to the animals after all thats what we were went for.

Colchester Zoo has a wide variety of animals and I wont detail everything we saw but to be honest they have pretty much every animal you can think of, some of our favourites included the elephants which you could feed at selected times and its something the children particularly enjoyed, there is always a long queue for feeding but to be honest you get to feed them in no time at all.

Another favourite was the seals in which you can walk through a tunnel and they swim above your head and something you don’t see at many Zoos. The train ride is also good but not very long and the queue for this was a little longer but they do try to run a couple of trains at the same time. It goes so far, stops and you can get off the train to see the lemurs, which is pretty cool as you can literally get face to face, after 5 minutes or so you can head out and back onto the train which goes back to the little station.

We took a picnic with us in the car but if you want to buy food there are plenty of eating facilities available but with all places like this, it’s not cheap. Oh before I forget I have to mention that when you leave off course you have to go through the gift shop, we left an hour before closing and well it was jammed as you would probably expect with parents, including us trying to persuade the children to pick something that doesnt cost the earth, which to be honest doesnt leave much.

Anyway if you have never been or are on holiday in the area, we would highly recommend a visit to Colchester Zoo, lots of animals to see, very clean, well laid out, even with the few hills of which some are a little strenuous, friendly staff and lots of play areas. It really has lots going for it which I guess is why its so popular, would we go back again in the future, well the family vote is a YES!
